Joseph Alexander Callaghan(1818–1884)My wife’s great great grandfather was baptised on Marriage solemnized by Banns in the Parish of St Pancras in the County of Middlesex Elizabeth Ann Hughes was born on 15th August 1821 at Richards Place, Old Street. She was baptised on 12th May 1822 at St. Andrew, Holborn, and was the second daughter of Charles Hughes, a Waterman, and his wife Sarah née Pratt, who had been married on 8th June 1818 at St. Mary, Newington, Southwark. When the 1841 Census was taken on the night of , Joseph and Elizabeth Callahan are found at Bear Alley, St. Sepulchre (HO107 Piece 728 Book 6 Folio 40 Page 22). They appear to have had a total of eight children: Joseph Alexander Callaghan (1844–)1844 (Q4 West London 2/254). He was baptised on 29th December 1844 at St. Bride Fleet Street. Henry Charles Calahan (1846–)(Q1 West London 2/254). He was baptised on 10th February 1847 at St. Bride Fleet Street. Charles Henry Calahan (1848–)(Q2 West London 2/256). He was baptised on 10th May 1848 at St. Bride Fleet Street. Elizabeth Frances Callaghan (1850–)No birth registration has been found for her. She was baptised on 15th January 1851 at St. Sepulchre, Holborn. When the 1851 Census was taken on the night of Sunday 30th March, the Callahan family are found at Fleet Lane, Saint Sepulchre (HO107 Piece 1526 Folio 311 Page 30). Joseph is said to be a thirty-six year-old Porter at a Fruiterer, and with them are their three children, Joseph Alexander aged six, Charles Henry aged three, and Elizabeth Frances aged six months. Annie Callahan (1852–)No birth registration has been found for her. She was baptised on 31st October 1852 at St. John the Evangelist, Lambeth. Cornelius Callahan (1854–1855)No birth registration has been found for him. He was baptised on 30th August 1854 at St. Bride Fleet Street. He died aged 14 months in 1855 (Q4 West London 1C/27), and was buried on 2nd October 1855 at the Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney. Mark Hughes Callahan (1856–?)He was born on 19th November 1856, but no birth registration has been found for him. He was baptised on 4th January 1857 at St. Andrew, Holborn. Alfred George Callahan (1858–1864)No birth registration or baptism record has been found for him. He died aged 5 years (Q1 West London 1C/29), and was buried on 4th January 1864 at the Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney. When the 1861 Census was taken on the night of , the family are found living at 43 Fleet Lane, St. Sepulchre (RG09 Piece 216 Folio 139 Page 20). Joseph Alexander Callahan is said to be a 44 year-old General Porter, their son Joseph Alexander is a 16 year-old Errand Boy, Charles Henry (aged 13) and Elizabeth Frances (aged 10) are both recorded as a Scholar, and also with them are their two youngest children, Mark Hughes (aged 4), and Alfred (aged 3). The family surname has been transcribed as “Callier” by Ancestry, and as “Collier” by Find My Past. Elizabeth Callahan née Hughes died in 1864 aged 43 (Q4 West London 1C/59), and was buried on 4th December 1864 at the Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney. 1871 Census at Prospect Terrace, St. Pancras (Ref: RG10 Piece 216 Folio 69 Page 61). The last Census Joseph Callahan appears in was taken on the night of 3rd April 1881, where he is found at the Workhouse (RG11 Piece 324 Folio 120 Page 3). |
