My research into

THE JONES FAMILY

Introduction

It goes without saying that tracing a family with the surname of Jones is going to be far from easy! Thankfully, modern DNA testing can sometimes help confirm your relationship to a specific family group. This is exactly what happened in my case.

Research seemed to indicate that my great great grandfather, John Jones, was born fairly locally in Nantyglo, Monmouthshire. Varying ages for him in the Censuses from 1871 to 1901, and his subsequent disappearance didn't help matters.

His marriage certificate in 1869 to Eliza Vale (whose surname was actually Veal) indicated that his father was a Collier named Jonathan Jones. This was helpful in that there weren’t many Jonathan Jones of a suitable age in our general area that could help locate the correct family. Having traced one specific family led me to the marriage of Jonathan Jones and Ann Esau, which took place at the Pisgah Baptist Chapel in Talywaine near Pontypool in 1840. Their marriage certificate named Jonathan’s father as John Jones, who was a Farmer. However, the question remained, was this really my Jones family?

This is where DNA testing came in! On my Ancestry DNA results, I matched up with a lady I knew to be a cousin of mine, having both descended from children of John Jones and Eliza née Veal, but we needed to go back one more generation to determine whether Jonathan Jones and Ann Esau were also our common ancestors. Ancestry DNA matched us both with a lady who descended from Maria Jones who was born at Nantyglo several years after our John. But, who was this Maria?

She was none other than our John’s younger sister, the daughter of Jonathan Jones and Ann née Esau! And so, this now took our family’s story to the beautiful Cambrian coast of Wales, and the village of Towyn in Merionethshire!
